Hine-nui-te-pō ("Great woman of night") in Maori legends, is a goddess of night and she receives the spirits of humans when they die. Hine-nui-te-pō shepherds the Wairua/souls into the underworld to ready them for the next stage of their journey.
This piece is one in my series "The Art of Death." It illustrates and discusses how various cultures personify death and our innate fear or celeration of it.
